Getting Your First Tattoo: What to Expect

Back to Blog

It's Normal to Be Nervous

Getting your first tattoo is a big deal, and a little nervousness is completely natural. At IRI Tattoo, we've guided hundreds of first-timers through the process, and we want you to feel informed and comfortable every step of the way.

Step 1: The Consultation

Before anything else, you'll sit down with your artist to discuss:

  • Your design idea — bring references, photos, or just describe what you have in mind
  • Placement on your body
  • Size and detail level
  • Budget and timeline

This is a no-pressure conversation. We'll give honest advice about what works best and make sure we understand your vision.

Step 2: Design & Approval

Your artist will create a custom design based on your consultation. You'll see the design before the session and can request changes. We don't start until you're 100% happy with the design.

Step 3: Preparation

On tattoo day:

  • Eat a good meal before your appointment — low blood sugar makes pain worse
  • Stay hydrated — drink plenty of water the day before and day of
  • Wear comfortable clothing that gives easy access to the tattoo area
  • Avoid alcohol for at least 24 hours before — it thins your blood
  • Get a good night's sleep

Step 4: The Session

Here's what happens in the chair:

  1. 1.Your artist cleans and preps the skin area
  2. 2.The stencil is applied — you'll check placement in the mirror
  3. 3.Tattooing begins with outlining, then shading and color

Does it hurt? Yes, but it's manageable. Most people describe it as a scratching or vibrating sensation. Some areas hurt more than others — ribs and feet are spicier, while arms and thighs are easier.

How long does it take? A small piece might take 1-2 hours. Larger work could be a full day or multiple sessions.

Step 5: Aftercare

After your session, your artist will clean the tattoo, apply ointment, and wrap it. You'll get detailed aftercare instructions — follow them carefully for the best results.

Tips for First-Timers

  • Start small if you're unsure about pain tolerance
  • Trust your artist — they know what works on skin vs. paper
  • Don't bargain on price — quality tattoos are an investment
  • Bring headphones — music or podcasts help pass the time
  • It's okay to take breaks during longer sessions
